ArthropodBase:Village pump
Those of you who use Wikipedia may know the role of the Village pump pages in terms of policy, development and troubleshooting all aspects of the project. For lack of originality I have emulated such a meeting place for the ArthropodBase wiki. This should be the first port of call when it doesn't quite work the way you thought, or wanted it to. Also this is the place to publicly air ideas for future enhancements and development work.

New content to be integrated
Although there are still some infrastructure developments I would like to make for the wiki (capturing meta data for existing experimental resources and people's area of expertise), I think we have enough in place for some medium scale data capture. So what things should we be capturing here? and what are the kind of questions people would want to ask of such a resource as part of white paper writing and maximising genomic scale efforts for their organism of choice?
I'll start the ball rolling by stating some obvious needs in the short term:
- Expand species coverage to include species with available high-throughput data sets.
- NCBI Genome Project species (currently 63)
- Expressed Sequence Tags datasets from GenBank
- Short Read Archive (SRA) submissions from Arthropod species
- Identify existing databases for Arthropod species and encourage them to maintain a Project page on this wiki (think of it as an advert)
- XML/Flatfile based cross-references from the ArthropodBase wiki to resources based on data supplied by existing databases

Hi Dan
- Currently the EST data is limited to dbEST. Can we capture SRA data?
- Is there some kind of RDF or RSS feed we can create in our genome database that ArthroBase can hook into? What should the structure be (or better, what should the info be)?

Documentation on how to sign up and what information to provide
As the ArthropodBase wiki was somewhat rushed out in time for the Entomological Society of America meeting I have been developing whilst people have been registering and adding content. This is obviously not ideal and a priority is to get some documentation/examples of how to use the forms to add information about species, researchers interests and skills and making cross-references to salient external resources. --Lawson 01:30, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
new species P. rapae
Hello,
I have added a new species to the wiki
Pieris rapae
and I have also added this to the Genome proposals. For some reason the species page is not showing up, and the first letter of the genus is left out. I also don't know how to indicate that I am a supporter of this species.
thanks for any help,
chris

Adding a 'Resources' link to the navigation bar may help to collect arthropod genomics resources on this wiki. Each resource could have a simple profile similar to what a person or organisation currently has on the wiki, which would be just enough to give a brief description, contact person, and provide a URL to the database/website/ftpsite.

I've added a Resource & DBs link to start this process. There is the usual form and template for these pages. If you have opinions on improving these or adding new data type options then please get in contact.

Phylogeny view
Hi Dan
Fantastic work on viz! re phylogeny view; i'm not so sure we're all up to scratch with our phylogeny, especially as complete as the one currently on. Perhaps we can limit it to phylum, order and family (+ genus/species of course)? What do people think?

username to realname
Hello
Is it possible to show the "Real Name" instead of the username in the various pages?

Initiatives
Hi
I would like to see an initiatives button on the navbar. Like a call to arms. Populating this wiki (and helping Dan with coding) could be an obvious first...
Also an informatics and phylogenetics working groups?

Alexie,
i5K Working group pages are up. I think the initiative idea is a good one and it is on the development list. --Bugadmin 09:09, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Change to creating new user accounts
Unfortunately due to persistent spamming of the site I have had to activate moderation of new user accounts. Anyone interested in using the ArthropodBase site can request an account from the following page.
http://arthropodgenomes.org/wiki/Special:RequestAccount
The requests will be moderated and accounts created in a timely manner as needed.
Many thanks Admin
Changes to the Person form to include i5K data
I've changed the Person form , adding some fields for i5K tags relating to the working groups and people's experience/areas of expertise. As this meant the form became rather long I have also introduced tabs (similar to the Species form) for clarity. --Bugadmin 09:03, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
