Members
The Beijing Genomics Institute is located in Beijing, China, founded in 1999 they have been involved in a number of high profile genome sequencing projects (including Human, Chicken, Rice, Silkworm and more recently the Giant Panda).
Library of Digital Life project
In January 2010 the BGI announced the Library for Digital Life project with the aim of sequencing 1000 plant and animal genomes by 2012. The Institute has earmarked $100 million dollars and will fully cover costs for species of interest to themselves or deemed scientifically or medically important. Other species are planned to be financed in collaboration with the supporting community with a 50:50 split where BGI will match the funding communities can raise.
This is an important opportunity for many Arthropod communities where a significant number of species could be sequenced. The criteria for selection have not been completely described but it is likely that community support (in terms of number of interested parties) will be a major factor. With this aim we have made a page on the www.arthropodgenomes.org wiki for the community to nominate species and show indicate their interest and support for candidate genomes.
