CSIRO Entomology is :
- helping to manage the increasing threat from invasive species and the benefits to agriculture from ecosystem services.
- is contributing to new bioindustries by manipulating enzyme and structural protein function and structure to create new biochemical pathways and biomaterials.
- investigating the biomolecular basis of odour and taste discrimination, leading to a biomimetic and bioinspired approach to rapid volatile sensing for food, health and security applications.
- characterising the identity and relationships of the Australian fauna and seeking to interpret its evolutionary origins using systematics, taxonomy and molecular biology. We are developing novel approaches to deliver the knowledge required for biodiversity conservation.
- developing new technologies to underpin an understanding of the potential of species evolving in response to a global environment that is altering as a consequence of climate change, impacts of invasive species, land use change and development, and habitat destruction. A particular focus is in the genetics of resistance to transgenic crops and the interactions of insects, microbes and plants at the genome and genetic level.
