Key pest of pome fruit and walnut orchards; one of a few lepidopteran pests where SIT control programs have been successfully implemented. Recently, a model for the development of genetic sexing strains using germ-line transformation. Due to significant progress in its genome analysis and advanced tools available (BAC library, genetic transformation, molecular cytogenetics, gene-based mapping, molecular markers), artificial diet and easy rearing, data on population genetics and (bio)insecticide resistance, the codling moth has a potential to become a model for tortricids, a group with a number of agricultural pests.
