i5K Comments for Habronattus oregonensis
Currently in culture, and are readily collected locally from May-August. Substantial quantities of RNA-grade specimens are currently stored in a -80° freezer. Habronattus jumping spiders possess some of the most elaborate male courtship ornaments and behaviors known among animals. Many of the species show geographic variability in these traits, making them excellent model organisms for the study of the evolution of phenotypic traits, geographic variation, hybridization, sexual selection, and speciation. Additionally, the mitochondrial genome of this spider was found to possess the smallest known transfer RNA genes ever described in any organism, and these likely require processing by novel nuclear-encoded polymerases before protein-synthesis can occur.
