The Lepidopteran insect, Helicoverpa armigera, or cotton bollworm, has a wide host plant range and the ability to develop resistance to many control agents. This moth is the single biggest pest for global plant agriculture, attacking over 100 crop plants at an annual cost estimated at over $US 5 billion. It has proven able to develop resistance to many widely used chemical insecticides. Moreover, genes for resistance to the Bt toxins now widely used in engineering transgenic crops (e.g. cotton) resistant to this pest have been detected in field and lab populations. In order to be able to properly manage this pest, a complete genome sequence would be invaluable. In collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center, a project is in progress to sequence this genome, estimated at 400 Mb, using 454 technology.
