Joining the AGC

Each User has 2 pages dedicated to themselves; a User page (User:Ernst Haeckel) and a Person page (Ernst Haeckel).

User pages are for personal notes and musings. There is no prescribed format or organisation for User pages.
Person pages are the primary place for information relating to you, your affiliation and interests. To keep a consistent look and feel to the pages and allow limited query capability these pages use a Template and hence data is expected to be integrated via a Form. As with all things Wiki there is of course space for unformatted text if users wish to write a few paragraphs.
The next few tabs will walk you through the sign up procedure and highlight some common mistakes in this process.

Request an account

Requesting an account is a simple process. Open the Request account page in your browser and fill in the E-mail address and Real name fields.

Request account page
Your account username will be the same as the Real name value and any communications from the AGC/i5K will be via the E-mail address stated at this point.
Although not mandatory it is recommended that you use your academic or professional E-mail address rather than a personal one.
The Personal biography is not mandatory and text placed here will reside on the User page.
Your request is mailed to Bugadmin who will moderate it. Moderation is turned on for the AGC/i5K Wiki to reduce spamming of the site.

Confirmation of account

Confirmation of the account will be sent to the supplied E-mail address.

A User page will be created using the Real name text.

Create your own Person page

The primary location of a researchers space on the Wiki is the Person page. These pages are structured and most of the information is captured via the Person form.

Person form page
It is suggested that you use your Real name for the title of your Person page. Inclusion of initials is accommodated but the system has not been designed to track people's titles (Prof., Dr. etc.). If you feel you must include this in your name then please add as a suffix (e.g. Ernst Haeckel, PhD.)
Try to be consistent with how you refer to yourself. The system works best if the Pagename and the Name field are identical.
The Person form is split into 3 sections using tabs (similar in design to those found on this page):

  • Personal information
  • Species interest
  • i5K information

The suggested minimum information for a Person includes the following:

  • Name - Full Real name as you wish to see it displayed on the site.
  • Surname - Used for sorting purposes in the People page summary.
  • E-mail - Contact E-mail so that other people can contact you.
  • Affiliation - Where you work. This will not automatically be reflected in the Organisations summary but will do so after a short delay.

Optional fields which are desirable include:

  • Species of interest - Linnaean naming for species of interest. Higher level taxonomic terms (e.g. Anopheles, Diptera etc.) can be used here. The field will autocomplete for Species names already in the system. Adding a new Species name here is fine, but consider populating the Species page for the new addition. Orphan Species pages are tracked and populated by Bugadmin on an ad hoc basis.
  • AGC Working groups of interest - These reflect the general areas in which you work.
  • i5K Working groups - If you are interested in becoming more active within the i5K initiative then this the place to sign up.

The Person pages can be edited at any point by opening the browser to your page, and using the edit with form tab.

Viewing your information at the AGC site

Once the Person page has been created a number of things happen on the site.

The page will appear in the People page summary.
Your name will appear in the People with an interest in this Species section of Species pages (if appropriate).
Your name will appear in the i5K Working group lists (if appropriate).
Note that these cross references happen in the database with a variable lag time. Either force the system to update by clicking on the refresh tab in the People or Species page or wait for the system to catch up. If you feel a problem persists then please contact Bugadmin.
