i5K Comments for Lasius niger
Lasius niger is a widespread and abundant ant in the holarctic region. This species is particularly suitable for aging and longevity studies, as its queens can reach the age of 30 years, one of the longest lifespan known in insects. Several studies have been aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms of L. niger queen longevity, however such efforts have been limited due to the absence of genomic resources. We recently constructed a normalized full-length cDNA library and are sequencing its transcriptome.

Common in Europe and North America, this species is often found attending aphids

Eusocial. monogynous, aphid/lycaenid symbionts, common European, aging studies
