i5K Comments for Loxosceles arizonica
Loxosceles spider bites cause >2000 serious medical problems annually. They are a model lineage for venom evolution and L. arizonica is an extensively studied species. Loxosceles has a unique medically important toxin, sphingomyelinase D (SMase D). We have also discovered at least 21 distinct classes of peptide neurotoxins in this species. With genomic sequence we will be able to better understand evolutionary dynamics of this toxic arsenal. As Haplogynes they are divergent from other well-studied spiders. Their genome could transform for our understanding of spider evolution. Greta Binford
