i5K Comments for Myrmicocrypta infuscata
Some attine systematists believe that the ancestral attine may have looked very much like a member of the genus Myrmicocrypta. M. infuscata is native to South America. It is perhaps the only species in the genus that constructs its nests in rotten logs; all other species in the genus are known to nest in subterranean cavities excavated in the soil. This species has been commonly collected in rain forests in the Amazon Basin and the Guiana Shield. Colonies usually contain 200-500 individuals. Comparative genomic data from a representative of the genus Myrmicocrypta will be critical for understanding the early evolution of the Attini and the Paleoattini. Ted Schultz
