We maintain the international stock center of Sciara coprophila, with lines inbred for almost 100 years. DNA and RNA are readily available. It is an excellent model organism to answer many questions in biology: Sciara has many unique features with regard to chromosomes (DNA amplification, imprinting, chromosome elimination, germ line limited chromosomes), a unique sex determination system and high resistance to x-irradiation.
