Beijing Genomics Institute 1000 plant and animal genome sequencing project

Hi All,

Sue Brown suggested that I post here an email I sent to several people working on new insect/arthropod model organisms. I have gotten a bunch of responses, but would like the efforts described below to be as inclusive as possible. Please let me know if you are interested.

Many of you probably already know about this: the Beijing Genomics Institute has a project to assemble reference genomes for 1000 plant and animal genomes over the next 2 years. They have set aside $100M to do this and have only done a few animal genomes so far, leaving close to 500 slots available for proposals. They are accepting proposals for new genomes (animal or plant) falling into different categories - such as pet, scientific, pest, etc. They are asking for numbers of citations on the organism and also number of researchers interested in each proposal. It seems logical that the higher these numbers are, the more likely the organism will be chosen. In my lab, we are working with several arthropods that I would have interest in seeing sequenced, including Ocnopeltus, Thermobia, Collembola and Artemia. I am wondering if any of you share interests in the genomes of these and/or other arthropods and would like to put in a joint proposal. Alternatively, if you have already put in proposals, it would be great to know.

Thanks in advance
